The interest in hemp is growing again these days, yet it takes a lot of effort into convincing people to give up cotton and try something different. Cotton is familiar and available. Communicating the benefits of hemp to a public used to consume cheap and used to reading only the price on labels takes effect slowly.
HEMP IS WISE: as it grows up fast and quite tall (up to 3 – 4 meters), hemp learned to be strong and flexible. For it’s own protection and interest, for its own survival, hemp had to grow faster than the weeds. So it doesn’t need pesticides. It doesn’t need insecticides either because when you’re wise, you know how to keep yourself and others healthy. Even if a plant gets ill, in a field of hemp, the disease will not spread. Such a wise plant will know to stay alive and make itself useful, so:
HEMP IS ANCIENT: our ancestors selected the best fibers from nature (hemp, linen, wool) in a time when centralized heating and air-conditioning didn’t exist. If we care to protect the environment, we should keep their use to the minimum so perhaps it’s wise to pretend they don’t even exist and return to those solutions for thermal comfort that functioned for ages.
HEMP IS RELIABLE : wearing hemp is like taming of the shrew. The fibers are sturdy at start but become more and more friendly in time: silky and smooth. Guess what: new born were first wrapped into an old hemp shirt belonging to the father, as it was the finest for its sensitive skin. :). Today we say hemp fabric is hypoallergenic. Hemp fabric can be woven to have a really rustic look & feel, as you can smell its oils and see little pieces of stalks and feel like you dress in grass. (and it is true). Hemp fabric can also be as fine as fine linen. It’s versatile and it can be used both for festive or for heavy-duty shirts. One thing doesn’t change: you can rely on hemp to look elegant carefree: the posture of hemp fabric has its own personality.
HEMP IS EASY: exactly like the plant itself, your shirt – which is the plant, doesn’t require complicated care or maintenance. Hemp neutralize body odors and you really don’t have to wash your shirt after each use: leave it out on the balcony over night and you’ll have it fresh in the morning. Since you don’t need to wash it often, it means less consume of water and detergents, less ironing and less time caring for all these. A hemp shirt doesn’t decay easily, it’s a piece of clothing you can actually wear after 100 years. You can easily understand why hemp is such a strong enemy of hyper consumerism and why there were so many interests to eliminate it.
Our ancestors considered hemp to be a gift from nature, had festivals and rituals dedicated to it and they were so right.
